Tokyo's huge population leads to more issues than you would expect. The implications of having a large population include problems accommodating so many people and providing these people with a practical forms of transport so they can get from place to place to work and live in the city as well as making sure there is food and services to support the population. Adults that live in Tokyo's Metropolitan area also need a job to earn enough money to support their family. With such a large population Tokyo struggles to provide its residents with enough jobs so we are faced with the problem of jobless, poor families. These are all major urban problems that Tokyo must take part in the global effort to achieve sustainability.
Helping future Tokyo
In order for future Tokyo to be a better place then we need to solve its current urban problems. The largest mega-city known as Tokyo needs to create a better future for itself. Urban farming is a new solution that has been put in place to help feed the ever increasing population more effectively reducing the need to transport food long distances. |
Solutions to Tokyos common urban problems
What has been done to transport people? Tokyo invests huge amounts of their budget supporting their traffic and transport infrastructure to create new and efficient roads and public transport options. Much effort has been put in place in order to help traffic flow and transportation of people on roads and public transport. This has reduced traffic jams and allows workers to arrive at work at the expected time. Being punctual is very important in Japan. The high volume of public transport, including extra fast trains allows workers coming from outside Tokyo and local residents to travel in more efficient and practical, and environmentally friendly ways to Japan's bustling city, Tokyo. Food Supplies As transportation for people has been solved to the best that it can, transportation of food also needs a solution. Tokyo has introduced urban farming. This stops excessive importing of fresh produce into Tokyo. Instead Tokyo produces this fresh produce and provides it to the people living in the city. This solution is sustainable and saves the transport of produce. Food still is imported into Tokyo but the quantity is not as large as it perviously was. Housing options Accommodation and housing is challenging as the space is limited so the solution that has been put in place to help house as many people as possible is high rise apartments which accommodate people in a practical way but this limits people by not allowing them to have any of their own garden spaces. Access to green space is generally limited to public spaces such as parks or local gardens. Expensive accommodation is not affordable for many local Japanese people as the income they receive is often low. A solution that has been put in place is cheaper, smaller housing. This allows lower income families to have a roof over there heads. Alternative accommodation One solution that has been put in place to accommodate business men who work long demanding hours are 'capsule hotels'. These are small, 1metre wide x 1 metre high rooms/capsules that only contain a bed and a television. These are particularly for workers who only intend on spending a very short time in Tokyo and might just want somewhere to sleep before they return to work the next day to support their work demands by avoiding the regular commute. |
