Old Tokyo
Tokyo hasn't always been a mega-city. Its population began its growth in the early 1900s but its major growth was in the twenty first century. This is when it was ranked as a mega-city with a population of 13.35 million people. This transition from old to new Tokyo has led to many of the cities current urban problems. Future Tokyo Will there be a future Tokyo? If Tokyo keeps expanding at this current rate the future Tokyo is at risk, because the continued rate of growth to date is not sustainable into the future. Many current urban problems will need to be resolved in order for future Tokyo to viable. |
Common urban problems
Transportation With such a large population there are bound to be many urban problems, one of the main ones is the ongoing transportation of people into and around the city. More than one million train services run daily in an attempt to get people from place to place. Transportation is one of issues that needs to be resolved as it is has many implications in Tokyo. The number of people needing to travel to and from various places around Tokyo is significant. This impacts the flow of traffic and causes many large traffic jams. Many people commute to Tokyo for work and this places extra pressure on the city's road and transport system during the working week to move the huge volume of people. Accommodation Providing low income families with housing is a challenge as space is limited due to Tokyo's huge population and this has pushed up the price of housing making it unaffordable for low income earners. Many people are living on the streets and this needs to come to a stop sooner rather than later. Millions of workers flock in to Tokyo every morning from many different cities and countries for their highly demanding jobs. To accommodate these workers Tokyo needs to be able to provide them with suitable and practical accommodation in order for the workers to fulfil there required job requirements that often include long hours. Job opportunities Japanese job requirements are quite different to the requirements in Australia. The demands of work are higher and failure or lack of conscientiousness is frowned upon. Work hours are often much longer as the jobs available are more stringent and demanding. There are a lot of high paying professional job opportunities in Tokyo and these workers especially are encouraged to work longer hours. There is also a demand for industry based work and these jobs for large manufacturers have highly regulated work conditions. |

Expansion of densely inhabited district (Okata)
This is an image of Okata, Tokyo, Japan. It is showing the expansion of this densely inhabited district. The population growth has almost doubled just between the years 1888 and 1986. Although this is showing the expansion from many years ago it still shows when Okata, Tokyo's population became densely inhabited.
